QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q:  IS THAT THE GAME WHERE YOU HIT THE LITTLE FEATHERY THING?

A:  Yes.  That ‘feathery thing’ is called a Shuttlecock or Birdie.

Q:  ISN’T BADMINTON FOR OLDER PLAYERS?

A:  The beauty of Badminton is that it is good for people of all ages, sizes and levels of competence.

Q:  IS THERE A CRECHE?

A:  Yes.  We have a crèche facility available.

Q:  IS IT EXPENSIVE?

A:  No.  Free introductory game.  Our current annual membership fee is $25.00 and our weekly playing fee is $8.00 (plus $3 for crèche).

Q:  I’VE NEVER PLAYED BEFORE – DOES THAT MATTER?

A:  No.  Many of our members started with little or no experience.  We’re happy to show you the ropes.

ALL ABOUT OUR BADMINTON CLUB:

We’ve been playing daytime Badminton for several years at the Boardman Stadium in Sunbury. We have a Monday morning social group and our Thursday Batanrouge team-based groups.  Our current membership comprises women of all ages (25 – 68!) and levels of ability.  Many of our members had never played the game before but have made their way up the ranks.

We’re all a bit too social and enjoy morning tea in between our games.  Sometimes, we go to tournaments at other venues and we have been known to host a tournament or two ourselves.

Monday players are allocated to sections one, two and three based on their level of experience.  Once a player has maintained an average score over a three-week period, they are then promoted to the next section.

Thursday players are assigned to a team and continue to play with that team throughout the season.

Here are some facts:

·        16 Overlapping feathers are used to make a shuttle which weights between 4.74 and 5.50 grams.  The best shuttles are made from goose feathers (with top quality feathers coming from the left wing!)

·        The fastest smash recorded is 332Kph at the 2005 Sudirman Cup in Beijing.

·        The name ‘Badminton’ comes from a stately home is Gloucestershire, England – home of the Duke of Beaufort.

·        Badminton has its origins in ancient civilizations in Asia and Europe with a game called ‘battledore (bat or paddle) and shuttlecock.

·        A contemporary form of the game was played in India in the 1800’s and was called ‘Poona’.

·        At its top level, Badminton is an extremely physically demanding sport which requires strength, endurance, muscular power, agility, speed endurance, anaerobic power and a capacity to accelerate / decelerate.

·        Badminton is the fastest racquet sport.

If you’re after a fast moving sport that requires a lot of quick movements, is played indoor and can be fun for the whole family – this is for you.

It is also an easy sport to try – just come along and away you go.  We have racquets or you can bring your own.
