Sunbury Electrification Rumour 63 Replies

Rumour has it from two independent, quite reliable, sources that the Sunbury electrification project will be announced this Sunday to coincide with the opening of the Craigieburn electrification project.

If true, this would mark a significant step towards converting many more car trips to rail, and increasing the liveability of Sunbury.

That will be great news. Now maybe the council will look at how they are going to overcome the problem of more illegally parked cars in and around the already overcrowded Sunbury Railway Station carpark. Hopefully it is not going to overcome the problem by just issuiing more parking fines.

The only benefit of electrification is the frquency of trains. When was the last time you caught an electric train on the sydenham, sunshine and footcray line? They are disgusting, rubbish on the floor, they stink and often found with very offending people.
This will be yet another step of sunbury losing it's country feel. Now you travel on a V-Line comfortable seats with headrests, rubbish bins and toilet facilities, also with a conductor on board to deter any trouble makers.

If the rumour becomes fact it will be fantastic for Sunbury.

I use sparks all the time Trev, and I really don't care whether the floors are linoleum rather than carpet, or if somebody's left their newspaper on a seat; all I want to do is get home - I don't want to spend an hour standing in the cold for the 'privilege' of using a train that has a toilet.

I am sure many are of the same opinion, preferring not to bother using a service which runs at a frequency so pathetic that it would allow them to drive to the city and back in the timeframe they spend waiting for a train. Or spend the whole journey from Sunbury to the city standing because there aren't enough seats in the peak.

Funny you should mention smells, since I've never had a spark smell like a toilet, Vline wins that award. Nor am I assaulted every time I use a service (as you anti-progress types would have us believe). All Connex services (bar the old Silvers) have security cameras, and security regular patrol evening services. In case you haven't noticed, the Vline conductor is stuck within a single Vlocity train set given the lack of gangways between carriages.

As a daily user of vline , i for one do NOT want sunbury to be electrified. I agree with trev, we have connies, trains are well often clean. Those travelling home at peak times, what chance would we get of been able to sit down-with so many metro trains full. Train stopping at each stop, would this make our trip home longer? ahhh yes

Please do not electrify the line. As a daily user of Vline the ONLY problem is frequency. There are plenty of seats, some people CHOOSE to stand. Currently Sunbury to Southern Cross morning peak average time 40mins - return the same. Now add in 4 - 6 extra stops, double the people - no thanks!

Not really, let's have a quick look at the timetable. The 0705 from Sunbury to Melbourne is made up of old 70s era Harris cars, pulled by two ancient P class locos, which are barely capable of reaching 100Km/h. It takes 35 minutes to travel from Diggers to Nth Melbourne. The corresponding spark does Sydenham to Nth Melbourne in 28 minutes. So unless the Vline train takes seven or more minutes from Diggers to Sydenham, it is actually SLOWER than the spark, even though it runs express.

A similar tale can be found in the evening peak. The 1717 from Melbourne reaches Diggers from North Melbourne in 33 minutes, whereas the spark does Nth Melb. to Sydenham in 29 minutes. Any slight differences in journey time are compensated by the fact that waiting time would be drastically reduced in the peak. Currently there is a massive 45 minute gap in the peak service between the 1632 from Melbourne, and the 1717 from Melbourne.

Vincent - timetable does the vline trains run to a timetable? How many times has the 7:05 arrived at spencer st 7:50 ( according to the timetable)
This rumor has been doing the rounds for many many years. If this is true, do you think it would leave from flinders street, then stopping at spencer - man i'd better get a seat.

Am I missing something here. An electrified line would mean more services more frequently.
What a bonus for workers and the youth of Sunbury. There would be fewer cars on both the Calder and Bulla Road.
Some people could get by with one car.
Less green house gases.
Sorry, I can't see any negatives.

Not a public transport user for many years now but have experienced it oiverseas in Europe and U.S.A. The main aim of peak public transport as far as I can asscertain is to move as many as quickly as possible. Yes you may have to stand and there may be overcrowding, but if it gets you from A. to B on time and quickly that is all the commuter cares about. V. line luxury is fine for those who have time, something most commuters do not have to spare. Electrifaction, why not?

If you want another noble Park then have electrification. Linking Sunbury to the metro system is just asking for trouble. Gangs [section removed by moderator] are running riot on stations down line and these would be linked to Sunbury if we were put on the same system. Country rail is much safer

So has anything been announced?

Posted by: Vincent M
Posted on: Monday, 01 October 2007 1:42 PM
The announcement was not made for Sunbury electrification, or any other new works, instead Premier John Brumby said at the media conference that announcements for major public transport improvements would be made in the forthcoming weeks.

So we'll have to wait and see.

Jack,

I'm confused as to where you are getting the idea that gangs are rampant on the Sydenham Line, and how will Sunbury turn into another Noble Park?

Sunbury doesn't have the same type of demographics that Noble Park does.

Also, as someone who patrols the Sydenham Line trains, it may be heavily patronised, but there isn't a 'gang' problem.

Steve try and get on a train at Sunshine or St Albans around sunset and see what is around.
